Lindum AS (Lindum) was established in 1997 as a municipality-owned company. In 2001 the company was converted to a limited company, 100 % owned by the municipality of Drammen. Today, Lindum consists of Lindum AS, with its main base in Drammen, and the subsidiary companies Lindum Kommunalservice AS (recycling plant), Lindum Energi AS (power production), Lindum Oredalen AS at Hurum (landfill), Bioressurs Østlandet AS in Fredrikstad (landfill), and Lindum International AS at Son. The company has 56 employees.

Lindum has a good, friendly working environment.

Lindum’s business areas

The company’s primary goal is to reclaim as much as possible of the resources in the waste by using waste as recycled raw materials, or by utilising the energy the waste represents.  The effect of materials recycling is reduced amounts of waste for landfills, reduced emissions of greenhouse
gases, reduced consumption of new raw materials and reduced energy consumption.

Sorting

Lindum has established its own sorting facility that mainly accepts construction and demolition waste and waste from small and medium businesses. The materials recycling percentage is 20 %, 76 % is sent on to energy recovery and 4 % to landfills.

Landfills

In 2008 Lindum received approximately 180.000 tonnes of waste for landfilling. 37 % of this waste is residual waste after removal of materials for recycling or energy recovery, whereas 28 % is soil from construction projects and sites in the area.

Energy

Methane gas is extracted from the landfill and converted to electricity and hot water. In 2008, approximately 16 GWh of electricity and heat was produced.

Odour

Lindum has a division working specifically with industrial odour reduction. The company has enlisted odour reduction experts and gained knowledge from reducing odour emissions from Lindum’s own landfills. This expertise and the solutions developed at Lindum are marketed to other manufacturing companies and landfills.

Sludge treatment

Lindum treats sludge from municipal water treatment plants in Drammen, Lier, Sande, Svelvik and Modum. In addition to the sludge treated at Lindum, sludge from the Bekkelaget water treatment plants is deposited. In 2008, Lindum’s sludge treatment in Drammen supplied 35.000 tonnes of sludge compost, 64 % to agriculture and 36 % to green areas (such as parks and road banks) and soil production.

Wet organic waste

In 2008, Lindum treated 10.000 tonnes of food waste. Most of this waste  ame from businesses and supermarkets. Approximately 70 % of the waste is composted in a closed aerobic plant. The remainder is treated in a  iocell, where the waste decomposes under anaerobic conditions and biogas is  xtracted. The produced compost is incorporated in our soil products, and is also supplied to ecological farmers.

Soil production

The raw materials for the soil production at Lindum are derived from fractions of organic waste. The company composts food waste, garden waste and sludge. Replacing peat with compost in soil mixtures has a large  ositive climate effect. In 2008, approximately 20.000 tonnes of soil products were produced for wholesale, whereas approximately 4,000 tonnes were bagged and sold mainly to private households.

The recycling plant

In 2008, 90,000 people visited the Lindum recycling plant. This is a 1.6 % increase as compared to 2007.  The degree of sorting, that is to say how good the public is at sorting their waste, has in recent years stabilised at  round 73 %.

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste is waste that cannot be expediently processed with other waste because of its potentially harmful effects on the environment, people and animals. In 2008, Lindum has accepted, declared and shipped 520 tonnes of environmentally hazardous waste. We have also accepted 321 tonnes of pressure impregnated wood, used for energy recovery.

Contaminated soil

Lindum offers several treatments for contaminated soil. To ensure efficient treatment of the soil, it is essential that the soil contents are analysed first. Based on these analyses, one of three main treatment technologies is chosen:
• Biological treatment, where micro-organisms are used to decompose the contamination. This
method is suitable for oilcontaminated soil, and for some of the weaker organic environmental
  pollutants.
• Sifting and sorting out larger rocks. The fine fraction of the contaminated  soil can be treated
biologically or deposited, depending on the degree and  type of contamination. More heavily
contaminated soil is stabilised with various additives.
• Lindum has several ongoing projects in which stabilisation of contaminated soil is tested, and
commercialisation of soil stabilisation services is under consideration.

The oil treatment plant

In 2008 Lindum built a treatment plant for oil-polluted sand fractions and oil-polluted sludge from vessels and oil separators. Oil-polluted sand is placed in a washer, where PHcontrolling substances are added.

The oil compounds are transferred to the water phase. The water is purified and taken to the municipal sewage system. The contamination of the sand is now reduced by between 95 and 99 %. Oil-polluted sludge is dewatered using heat from biogas, and then treated biologically. With this process, the amount to be deposited is reduced. The plant will have a capacity of between 3 and 4,000 tonnes when in full operation.

Numerous research projects at Lindum

The company is putting considerable resources in its research and development work (R&D work), associated with both new and further developments in waste treatment processes.  Since the company’s goal is to be an innovative and versatile company taking responsibility for waste and the environment, this is an important activity.  By this, Lindum wants to be an active participant in developing new environmental technologies.

Some Lindum research projects:

• Converting cupper-rich sludge from marine industry to a valuable soil product.
• Converting waste to hydrogen (with the Institute for Energy Technology).
• Stabilisation of PAH-contaminated soil (with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and Bioforsk,
the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research).
• ”From food to waste to food” (with the University of Oslo and Norsk jordforbedring AS).
• Reduction of malodorous emissions from landfills.
